During the meeting with municipal officials in Liepaja, the
British diplomat said the purpose of his visit was to provide assurance that
cooperation between the United Kingdom and Latvia, including Liepaja, will
continue also after the referendum in which the British people voted in favor
of their country’s withdrawal from the EU.
”The British ambassador stressed that the outcome of the
referendum would not affect bilateral cooperation in business, education,
culture and other spheres,” told Dace
Freidenfelde, a spokeswoman of the
Liepaja City Council.
”I can assure you that we are open to business and other
cooperation also in the future and that we are interested in expanding and
strengthening cooperation,” the municipal spokeswoman quoted Colley as saying.
After the meeting in the city council and a presentation
about of business and tourism opportunities offered by Liepaja, the British
diplomat visited the Liepaja port where he was informed about the transport and
logistics opportunities, tax benefits and other support available to the
companies operating in the Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
Colley is also scheduled to meet with the head of the local
education board, Kristine Niedre-Lathere, to discuss further education
cooperation and to attend an education conference during which Latvian and
British experts will share their experience about using modern technologies in
teaching.
In conclusion of his visit to Liepaja, the British diplomat
will visit several production plants of UPB holding which in 2014 registered a
subsidiary in the UK, increasing the number of its foreign subsidiaries to
eight.
