Carriage of freight by rail in Estonia dropped 6.5% year on year to 1.38 million tons in August 2020, writes LETA/BNS.

Month over month, an increase of 3.6% was registered, data available from Statistics Estonia shows.

Measured in passenger-kilometers, passenger transportation decreased 19% on year to 27.6 million passenger-kilometers. In month-to-month comparison an increase of 1.1% took place.

Birgitta Ojamaa, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said in a press release that while carriage of passengers and freight by rail has not yet reached last year's levels, the situation is nevertheless improving.

During the three summer months, altogether 1.5 million boardings were registered on trains and 4 million tons of freight was carried by rail.

By month, both the number of passengers and the amount of freight were smallest in June, respectively 466,000 boardings and 1.3 million tons.
