Latvia to impose curfew, state of emergency to be extended until February 7
The government is due to take the final decision on this measure this Wednesday, December 30.
The Cabinet also agreed in principle to extend the state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic until February 7.
From December 30 until January 4, as well as on January 8 and 9 people will be banned from leaving their homes between 22:00 and 5:00, LETA was told at the State Chancellery.
Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) said at a news conference Tuesday that the curfew will be introduced with the aim to reduce contacts among people even more.
The State Chancellery said that there are no plans at the moment to restrict the movement of people during daytime and that shops will thus be able to work from 6:00 until 21:00 so that employees can get to work and return home without breaching the curfew. The restrictions on working hours would also apply to catering establishments, which will still be allowed to provide takeaway meals.
The government and experts continue work to agree on clear details of the curfew regulation. The Cabinet and the Crisis Management Council are due to hold their next joint meeting on Wednesday, December 30.
