Beach volleyball duo Plavins/Smedins beat Germany's Erdmann/Matysik at Olympics

Latvian beach volleyball pair Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins beat Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik of Germany 19-21, 23-21, 15-9 in their first match at London Olympics on Sunday, informs LETA.
Plavins/Smedins are seeded seventeenth at the Olympics, whereas Erdmann/Matysik are seeded eighth.
Plavins/Smedins will play their second Group E match on Tuesday against Venezuelans Jesus Villafane and Igor Hernandes, who lost to Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands on Sunday 2-1.
As reported, the other Latvian beach volleyball duo, Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Ruslans Sorokins kicked off the Olympics with a win on Saturday, defeating Poland's Mariusz Prudel and Grzegorz Fijalek 2-1 in the opening Group D match.
The top two finishers in every group will advance to the tournament's quarterfinals.
