During the Krzysztof Kieslowski Awards ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, Martins Slisans' screenplay for the feature film "The Apartments" took home the top honor for the Best Eastern and Central European Script, the first such achievement in the history of Latvian cinema.

"The Apartments" is a story about two apartments, the tenants, and their hidden passions from 1961 up to Latvia's accession to the European Union, as the film studio Platforma's producer Guna Stahovska informed LETA.

"The Apartments" is a comedy with limited dialog but with intricate characters and interaction thereof.

The winner's cash prize is 10,000 euro, and Slisans was singled out of 12 screenplays from seven Eastern and Central European countries, with the jury noting his "originality and unusual world view."

"The Apartments" is produced by Platforma.
