Latvian National Opera (LNO) Managing Director Andrejs Zagars is the only person who has applied for this position so far, LETA was informed by Culture Ministry's spokeswoman Annija Senakola.

As reported, on November 30, the Culture Ministry announced the opening for the LNO director's post.

The ministry will wait for other potential applications until the end of the week.

The ministry has set up a commission which will evaluate all candidates for the position. Taking into account LNO's importance in Latvia's cultural environment and role in the country's international image, Culture Minister Zaneta Jaunzeme-Grende (All For Latvia!-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK) proposed the commission include various culture management professionals, as well as tourism and personnel management experts from music and tourism sectors.

Zagars has been the head of LNO since 1996. He has staged many operas at the LNO and received numerous Latvian and foreign state awards for his contribution to the arts. His contract expires this month.
