Barricades 20th anniversary events under way in Riga

Print versionTwo events were on the calendar on January 16 as Latvia remembers the 1991 Barricades.
A ceremony was held at this hour on Vecmilgravis Bridge in Riga. On January 16, 1991, a man by the name of Roberts Murnieks was killed on the bridge when OMON forces attacked it.
Barricades Museum is screening documentary footage all day long today about the extraordinary developments 20 years ago this month.
Commemorative events will be held all of next week, with the main ones on January 20 on Dome Square and in Dome Cathedral.
