Estonian composer Pärt recognized on international level

BC, Tallinn, 07.01.2011.Print version

Arvo Pärt's music is some of the most immediate and recognizable of any contemporary composer, and its familiarity has made some hear in it only a facile style of "holy minimalism," where for others, it has life-changing power, The Guardian writes on Thursday, January 6.

"Meeting Pärt felt like a pilgrimage to a mythical musical hideaway, but he was funny and generous – the exact opposite of his reclusive image," that is the way the author of the article Tom Service describes personal emotions on his way to the interview, and its aftertaste following the conversation with the famous composer.

Deep philosophical, biographical, musicological notes are beneath his music, informs LETA.

Pärt reveals the key to mathematical-musical riddle of his works: "One and one makes – one."

"You have to do something to keep your creativity going," he told.

His understanding and passion for music emerges from love to each and every musical note; this concept was once recommended to the musician by a street cleaner in his neighborhood.

Arvo Pärt founded the International Arvo Pärt Centre in 2009 with a help of his family for the purpose of preserving Arvo Pärt's creative contribution to the arts and the education of future generations.

The center is located at Laulasmaa and is not yet open to the public. The center will offer opportunities to study Pärt's work and music.
