Latvia marks 91st anniversary of victory over Bermontians at Riga

A large number of various events will take place in Riga and elsewhere in Latvia today to mark the 91st anniversary of War Heroes Remembrance Day, also known as Lacplesis Day.
Latvia marks Lacplesis Day today in memory of the fight for freedom from 1918 to 1920.
On November 11, 1919, the rag-tag Latvian Army and Riga residents defeated the 50,000-strong West Russian Volunteer Army led by Russian Colonel Pavel Bermont and German General Rudiger von der Goltz.
Church bells resounded throughout the city after the invading army was driven out.
The freedom battles cost the Latvian army 57 officers and 686 soldiers.
The medal - the Lacplesis Order, was established on November 11, 1919, and the day designated a national holiday.
Today, flags are out at all public and private buildings.
