Swede of Latvian descent to become Sweden's youngest-ever parliamentarian

BC, Riga, 19.10.2010.Print version

18-year-old Anton Abele, a Swede of Latvian descent and student at the Stockholm School of Economics, is set to become Sweden's youngest-ever member of parliament as he prepares to take a seat in the country's Riksdag, writes LETA.

The previous record was held by former Green Party deputy Gustav Fridolin, who was 19 upon his election to the Riksdag in 2002.

Abele's entry into parliament comes after Moderate Party colleague Anna Konig Jerlmyr was named as the new deputy mayor of Stockholm. Abele came to the nation's attention in 2007 as the organizer of an anti-street violence demo after the death of teenager Riccardo Campogiani in an attack in Stockholm. The resulting social movement soon numbered tens of thousands of supporters. The teenager was fifteenth on the Moderate Party ticket in the September 19th general election.

Abele finished school this summer and entered the Stockholm School of Economics. In a conversation with the "Svenska Dagbledet" newspaper, he admitted that at present he has put his studies aside in order to focus entirely on his upcoming work as an MP; however, he promised not to forget his education, and to continue to his studies in the future.
