Water level rise in Emajõgi River in Estonia exceeds the record of a decade

Tuesday morning, the water level in one of Estonia's biggest rivers Emajõgi in South East Estonia rose over the 290 cm level, thus breaking the record of a decade; the water level continues to rise, LETA/Postimees Online reports.
The water level was around 290 cm above the conditional zero point in January 2005 most recently. It was higher than that in April 1999, 297 cm. Most likely that figure will also be broken by Wednesday.
Estonian Meteorology and Hydrology Institute hydrologist Ene Randpuu said that the water level in the river will continue to increase since the Võrtsjärv Lake and Pedja and Põltsamaa rivers that feed it are rising.
Tartu city government warned people who live in lower areas by the river to check their cellars and make these as water-proof as possible as it is likely that there will be some flooding since in the last two days, the water level in the river has risen by ten cm a day and continues to rise.
