Latvian national football team loses 1:2 to Honduras

Last night, on November 15, the Latvian national men's football team played a tight battle against Honduras, ultimately bowing 1:2 (1:1).

 

The sole goal for the Latvians was scored by Vladimirs Kolesnicenko – an 11-meter penalty kick after Vitalijs Astafjevs was knocked down at the end of the first half.

 

Speaking of Astafjevs, he set a European record yesterday, playing in his 158th game with the national team, informs LETA.

 

Several of Latvia's leading players did participate in the match against Honduras – defender Kaspars Gorkss, midfielders Aleksandrs Cauna and Juris Laizans, as well as forward Maris Verpakovskis.

 

As reported, Honduras has qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which will be held next summer.

 

On the other hand, Latvia has not qualified for the World Cup, as it finished in a respectable third place in their European qualification group.

 

At the moment, Honduras is ranked 35th in the FIFA football rankings, whilst Latvia is ranked 47th.

 

The roster of the Latvian squad for the upcoming game against Honduras is as follows: goalies – Andris Vanins ("Sion", Switzerland), Aleksandrs Kolinko ("Ventspils"); defenders – Deniss Ivanovs ("Ajax", South Africa), Oskars Klava, Dzintars Zirnis (both – "Liepajas metalurgs"), Deniss Kacanovs, Pavels Mihadjuks (both – "Ventspils"), Ritus Krjauklis ("Dinaburg"); midfielders – Vitalijs Astafjevs, Jurijs Zigajevs (both – "Ventspils"), Andrejs Rubins (Baku "Inter", Azerbaijan), Vladimirs Kolesnicenko, Aleksandrs Fertovs (both – "Skonto"), Maksims Rafalskis ("Liepajas metalurgs"), Genadijs Solonicins ("Simurg", Azerbaijan); forwards – Girts Karlsons ("Inter"), Kristaps Grebis ("Liepajas metalurgs"), Andrejs Pereplotkins ("Skonto").
