Latvia gets second win at EuroBasket Women 2009

Latvian national women's basketball team yesterday, on June 8, defeated Hungary 76-59 (20-11, 20-13, 17-17, 19-18) in their second Group B game at the European Women's Basketball Championship in Liepaja, informs LETA.

 

Anete Jekabsone-Zogota scored 25 points, Zane Tamane had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Gunta Basko scored 14 points.

 

In another Group B game yesterday, Poland defeated Greece 62-60.

 

As reported, in their first Group B games on Sunday, Latvia defeated Poland 86-52, whereas Hungary lost to Greece 43-59.

 

Latvia will play its last Group B game tonight at 8:15 p.m. against Greece.

 

The top three teams in each group will advance to the qualifying round of the championship, the last team will be eliminated.

 

As already reported, the preliminary stage group games take place from June 7 to 9, which will be followed by the qualification stage, which will be played from June 11 to 16. The quarterfinals will be played from June 17 to 18, semifinals – June 19, whilst the finals and the game for third place will be played on June 20.

 

The Latvian national women team's best achievement is fourth place at the previous European Basketball Championships.

 

The finals roster of the Latvian women's basketball team participating at this year's European Women's Basketball Championships is as follows: Anete Jekabsone-Zogota ("Dynamo" Russia), Gunta Basko ("Halcon Avenida" Spain), Ieva Tare ("Cesis"), Zane Tamane ("Nadezda" Russia), Zane Eglite ("TTT Riga"), Dita Krumberga ("TTT Riga"), Aija Brumermane ("TTT Riga"), Anda Eibele ("Cesis"), Aija Putnina ("CB Olesa" Spain), Kristine Karklina ("Cesis"), Sabine Niedola ("Liepajas metalurgs"), Liene Jansone ("Gambrinus Sika Brno" Czech Republic).
