The Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence Riho Terras stated that Estonia is considering options for contributing to ensuring the security of elections that are to take place this year in Afghanistan, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

Terras met on Tuesday the deputy Secretary of Defence of the U.S. Michelle Flournoy in Pentagon on Tuesday, discussing the strategy for Afghanistan and military co-operation between Estonia and United States in Afghanistan.

When speaking about Afghanistan, Terras and Flournoy considered it important to make the core services accessible for the residents, but the precondition for this is to improve the security situation over there. It was also considered necessary to increase the role of the United Nations in co-ordinating and expanding the operations to the entire territory of Afghanistan.

Options to continue the successful military co-operations in Afghanistan between the two countries were also discussed.

"Before the end of this year, Estonia plans to start together with the United States to form a common training team, with the task to provide training to the Afghanistan's army," said Terras.
