Janis Lusis, an Olympic champion and one of the 20th century's best javelin throwers, has passed away at the age of 80 years, the Latvian Athletics Association informed LETA.
Lusis, who won the Olympic gold in 1968, had been battling a grave illness.
Lusis is the only Latvian athlete to win gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals - Olympic gold in 1968 in Mexico, silver in 1972 in Munich, and bronze in 1964 in Tokyo. Lusis is a four-time European champion and two-time world record holder. He was also bestowed with the Order of Three Stars.
In 2014, Lusis was inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Hall of Fame.
