IOC officially confirms results of Sochi Olympics; Melbardis' 4-man and 2-man bob teams upgraded to gold and bronze
Print versionThe International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday officially confirmed the results of the Sochi Olympic games, and upgraded the Latvian four-man and two-man bobsleigh teams piloted by Oskars Melbardis to gold and bronze respectively, ifnormed LETA/BNS.
Melbardis' pushers in the four-man competition Daumants Dreiskens, Janis Strenga and Arvis Vilkaste have also had their silver medals upgraded to gold, with Dreiskens will receive a bronze in the two man.
As reported, in 2017, the IOC stripped Russian bobsledder Alexander Zubkov of his Olympic gold medal won in Sochi in 2014.
Zubkov and a number of other Russian athletes were suspected of doping violations at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The case was investigated by the IOC Disciplinary Commission, chaired by Executive Board member Denis Oswald, and its findings served as the basis for disqualification of Zubkov and three other Russian athletes.
The 43-year-old Zubkov, who carried the Russian flag at the Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony even served as President of the Russian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation after the Sochi Games for a while, but has sine been banned from the Olympic Games for life.
At the Sochi Olympics, Zubkov won gold in the four and two-man bobsleigh. Melbardis' team placed second in the four-man bobsleigh and fifth in the two-man. Another Russian two-man team piloted by Alexander Kasyanov, which placed fourth in Sochi, was also disqualified for doping violations.
