Abragciems beach declared cleanest in Latvia, Karosta beach in Liepaja named dirtiest - monitoring

The beach in Abragciems on the coast of the Gulf of Riga has been named the cleanest seaside territory in Latvia, while the highest amount of litter per 100 meters has been found on the seaside at Karosta in the southwestern Latvian city of Liepaja, informs LETA reffering to Janis Ulme, an expert at the Foundations for Environmental Education.

The
foundation’s expert said that the annual My
Sea monitoring measured the amount of litter found per 100 meters in 43
monitoring areas. Abragciems emerged as the least littered seaside territory
with only 36 units of trash found per 100 meters on the beach.
The beach
in Purciems followed with 46 units of trash, Kaltene with 51, Mikeltornis with
54, Skede with 71, Laucu rocky beach with 81 and Ziemupe with 100 units of
litter per 100 meters.
The seaside
territory in Karosta, Liepaja, emerged as the dirtiest beach with 937 units of
trash counted per 100 meters. Daugavgriva beach in Riga was the second most
littered in Latvia with 850 units of trash and the Liepaja central beach was
third with 697 units rubbish.
