Latvian mountaineers
have for the first time climbed to the top of Huascaran - the fourth highest
mountain in South America, expedition member Kristaps Liepins informed LETA.
Huascaran is the
highest peak in Peru and the fourth highest in South America. The 6,768 meters
high mountain is one of the highest in the world by the distance from the
Earth’s center.
This is the first
successful attempt by Latvian mountaineers to conquer the peak. In 2001, a
group of climbers led by Teodors Kirsis
tried to reach the mountaintop, but after spending two nights at camp at the
altitude of 6,000 meters they were forced to turn back due to adverse weather.
