Latvian finance minister defeats current world champion Hou at Baku Chess Olympiad

Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola defeated the current Women's
World Chess Champion and leader of the FIDE World Chess Federation's ranking
Hou Yifan in the fourth round of the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku yesterday,
however, the Latvian women's team was defeated by the Chinese team 1.5-2.5.
Reizniece won her match, Ilze
Berzina managed a draw, while Laura Rogule and Elina Otikova lost their
matches.
Hou is the highest-ranked female player in the FIDE ranking with
2,658 points, while Reizniece-Ozola is in 318th place with 2,243 ranking
points.
The Latvian women's chess team at Baku Chess Olympiad earlier
defeated South Korea, Canada and Iran, and is currently in 20th place.
In the meantime, Latvian men's team was defeated by Belarus
1.5-2.5 yesterday. Igors Kovalenko, Arturs Neiksans and Nikita Meskovs ended
their games in a draw, while Aleksandrs Sirokovs lost his match.
The men's team, too, scored three wins in the first three rounds,
defeating Pakistan, Sweden and Chile. The men's team is currently in 17th
place.
The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament, the previous
Olympiad was in Norway's Tromse where Latvian men's team placed 35th and
women's team 39th.
Latvia has participated in Chess Olympiads since the first
Olympiad in Paris in 1924, which was won by Latvia's Hermanis Matisons.
