Several people gathered outside the Ukrainian embassy building in Vilnius to congratulate Nadiya Savchenko, a Ukrainian military pilot jailed in Russia, on her 35th birthday. The activists shouted "Glory to Ukraine!" and sang the country's national anthem as they handed a birthday card to a Ukrainian diplomat, informs LETA/BNS.

"We have forwarded a card congratulating Nadiya on her birthday through the embassy," Irina Kulnukova, who has come from Russia to live in Lithuania, told BNS.

She wore a T-shirt with Russian President Vladimir Putin's photo and text reading "The most dangerous criminal wanted".

Savchenko earlier this year was sentenced to 22 years in jail for involvement in the killing of two Russian journalists in eastern Ukraine. However, a couple of weeks ago, she received an official form needed for her to be extradited from Russia to Ukraine.

"I spoke to Nadiya's sister and she told me that there was hope for her release. But you know, Putin is such an unpredictable madman and you can expect everything from him," Kulnukova said.

Savchenko is also a member of the Ukrainian parliament.
