Bleeding canker of Horse Chestnut detected in Latvia for first time

The Latvian State Plant Protection Service (VAAD) experts have detected a dangerous disease – the bleeding canker – in a sample of Horse Chestnut for the first time in Latvia, informs LETA.
The bleeding canker or bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv aesculi, affecting horse chestnut, was identified in the National Phytosanitary Laboratory at the end of 2015.
The bacteria has been spread in northwestern Europe, but so far had not been detected in Latvia. The first symptoms are bar cracks on the stem with the bacteria spreading further to branches. The affected trees may die in 3-5 years.
In 2013 Latvian chestnuts suffered from a different problem, the Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner (Cameraria ohridella), causing browning of chestnut leaves.
