Estonia will submit to the American Film Academy 88th Oscars Award in the foreign movie category Elmo Nüganen's film "1944", LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The selection was made from among the Estonian full-length feature films, which were screened for the first time during the period from 1 October 2014 to 30 September 2015, at least on seven consecutive days in commercial cinemas.

The film depicts the events of the Second World War in 1944 in Estonia, from the Blue Hills battles in July to conquering the Sõrve Peninsula by the Red Army at the end of November. The war is shown through the eyes of Estonian soldiers who had to pick sides and fight against fellow brothers in either the German Army or the Red Army. Choices have to be made, not only by the soldiers, but also by their loved ones.

"1944" premiered on February 15th, and reached the highest number of viewers that an Estonian film has collected in the first week – 44,879 spectators. 38 days after the premiere, the film exceeded the 100,000 viewer limit. So far, the only Estonian film that had collected over 100,000 thousand viewers was Elmo Nüganen's previous film "Names on the marble plaque" which premiered in 2002.
