Former OMON "black beret" sentenced to 6.5 years in jail in Riga

The Riga Regional Court today sentenced the former Soviet Riga OMON police unit "black beret" Mikhail Bruy to 6.5 years in prison, reports LETA.

 

Bruy's whereabouts are currently unknown, and he was tried in absentee.

 

The court found Bruy guilty on various counts: between January 14 and January 21, 1991, Sorokin participated in the assaults on the Interior Ministry, the Latvian State Television studio and Riga branch of Minsk Police School; in these attacks, cameramen Gvido Zvaigzne and Andris Slapins and other civilians were killed. Sorokin was also involved in assaults on Latvian volunteer police units.

 

A full court verdict will be released on February 26.

 

As reported, overall charges were brought against 15 OMON "black berets", 11 have been convicted.

 

The Riga OMON forces carried out various attacks against pro-independence supporters during the January 1991 events in Latvia.
