Rock opera "Lacplesis" staged for last time in 2014

Zigmars Liepins and Mara Zalite's rock opera "Lacplesis" was staged for the last time in Valka yesterday, in Liepaja the opera will be shown on November 7, in Riga on November 8, and in Cesis on November 9, producer Juris Millers informed LETA.

 

Juris Jope or Daumats Kalnins will play the role of Lacplesis, but Ginta Krievkalna will play Laimdota. The opera will also feature various Latvian stars and new talents: Marts Kristians Kalnins, Miks Dukurs, Paula Dukure, Ieva Sutugova, Juris Vizbulis, Janis Kursevs, Davids Kalandija, Ivo Grisnins-Grislis, Janis Kirsis, Miks Abaronins, and other soloists.

 

Opera "Lacplesis" is directed by Inese Micule, and choreographed by Olga Zitluhina. The costume designer is Anna Heinrihsone, but the vocal coach – Niks Matvejevs.

 

The rock opera was first staged in 1988, becoming the symbol of the Latvian National Awakening and Singing Revolution. The 25th anniversary production of "Lacplesis" was staged in 2013. In total, 25 shows took place and 22 of these concerts were sold-out. The total expenses of the project reached half a million euros.

 

"Lacplesis" is regarded as the Latvian national epic. The poem by Andrejs Pumpurs describes the life of the legendary hero Lacplesis, chosen by the gods to become a hero of his people. His name means "Bear-slayer", because as a young man, living as the adopted son of the Lord of Lielvarde, he kills a bear by ripping its jaws apart with his hands.
