Virgin Mary Ascension celebration events began in Latvia
Print version
The Virgin Mary Ascension holiday celebration started yesterday in Latvia, reports LETA.
Church services will be held at Aglona Basilica throughout the week, with the climax taking place on August 15 – Virgin Mary Ascension Day.
This year marks the 25th anniversary since pilgrimages to Aglona were allowed in Latvia after the period of Soviet occupation when such pilgrimages were banned and people had to visit Aglona in secrecy.
Aglona (eastern Latvia) is the site of the most famous Catholic shrine in Latvia – the Basilica of Our Lady of Aglona. It is a globally known Catholic religious center, where thousands of pilgrims come to celebrate the Ascension of Mary on August 15 each year.
Last year, up to 100,000 pilgrims arrived in Aglona to celebrate the Virgin Mary Ascension Day.
