A total of 40,000 attended the various events marking the 24th anniversary of the restoration of independence of Latvia on Sunday in Riga, as Indra Vilde from the Riga City Council's Education, Culture and Sports Department told LETA.

The May 4 Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of Latvia was celebrated by various cultural and spots events throughout Riga yesterday, closing with a gala concert on the Daugava Embankment.

The May 4 events were taking place in the downtown – near the Freedom Monument, at the Daugava Embankment and in Vermanes Park, and elsewhere in the city – in Lucavsala Park, culture centers in Imanta and Ilguciems, the "Ziemelblazma" culture center, Plavnieki Park.

Some of the most popular events included an orienteering competition through the Old Town Riga, chess and checkers tournaments, a novuss tournament, and various creative workshops.
