On Sunday the 80th anniversary of Lithuanian pilot's Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas flight across the Atlantic is commemorated in Poland, informs LETA/ELTA.

80 years ago, on 1933 July 15, Lithuanian pilots Darius and Girenas flew across the Atlantic in their plane Lituanica for 37 hours 11 minutes without landing and completed 6,411 kilometres before crashing.

Before Darius and Girenas flight in 1933, there were 73 attempts to fly the Atlantic, however, only about 30 of the attempts were successful and only on 3 occasions more than 6,000 kilometres were flown.

Their attempt was the most precise as regards staying on course. And 6,411 kilometres was the second longest flight without stopping at the time, making it a historic achievement in aviation.

In Poland – Szczecin, Pszczelnik and Mysliborz – events commemorating the historical achievement are held. They are attended by Lithuanian delegation consisting of President Dalia Grybauskaite, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius and other representatives from ministries and the armed forces.
