Newcomers to make up nearly 2/3 of next Riga City Council

Newcomers will make up nearly two thirds of the Riga City Council that has been elected in Saturday's snap municipal elections, as 21 of the councilors have already been elected to the city council before, while 39 have been elected for the first time, LETA has found out.

Harmony and Honor to Serve Riga (GKR) dominated the previous city council with 32 seats, of which 21 were held by Harmony and 11 by GKR. By the time the city council was dissolved, Harmony was left with 16 seats and GKR with 12. 


After this weekend's city council elections, Harmony and GKR together have 17 seats on the city council - 12 for Harmony and five for GKR.


In the previous elections, the joint ticket of Latvian Association of Regions and For Development of Latvia won nine mandates, but by the end of its tenure the group had eight members on the city council. 


The New Conservative Party won nine seats on the previous city council, but the group was down to seven members in the end and the National Alliance group reduced from six to five members. 

As reported, For Development/For and the Progressives (AP/P) have won the Riga City Council elections, with Harmony taking second place and New Unity placing third, the Central Election Commission informed, citing results from all 156 polling stations.


According to the preliminary election results, seven political parties have won representation on the Riga City Council. AP/P will receive 18 mandates, Harmony 12, New Unity ten, the National Alliance and the Latvian Association of Regions seven, Honor to Serve Riga (GKR) five, and LKS and JKP will each get four mandates.


According to the votes counted so far, AP/P leads with 26.16% of votes, followed by Harmony with 16.89% and New Unity with 15.24%. The ticket of the National Alliance and the Latvian Association of Region follows with 9.64% and GKR with 7.72% of votes in the snap elections. Latvia's Russian Union (LKS) has won 6.52% and the New Conservative Party (JKP) 6.39% of votes.
