The design project of the Rail Baltica station and related infrastructure at the airport has been completed and the construction project has been approved by the State Railway Technical Inspectorate. The project has received approvals from 32 institutions and permission to start construction of the link between the high-speed railway and the airport.

The project envisages construction of a three-level railway station at Riga Airport. The ground level will ensure access to the station and airport complex: new access roads, parking facilities for automobiles and bicycles, stairs and escalators. On the first floor there will be passenger waiting areas, ticket offices and machines and information stands. The train station will be built on the top floor of the complex.

The design project has been worked out by Prosiv, an international partnership of three companies - Italy's Sintagma, Slovakia's Prodex and Latvia's Vektors T. The price of the contract is EUR 4.5 million. The total length of the railway line connecting the center of Riga with the airport is 4.4 kilometers.

A tender is currently being held to select a contractor to build the Rail Baltica station and infrastructure at Riga Airport. Eight candidates have made it to the second round of the tender. The winner of the tender is expected to be announced this year so that the construction works can begin in 2021.

RB Rail is a joint venture set up by Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania to act as the central coordinator for the Rail Baltica project for the construction of a new fast conventional, European standard gauge double track electrified railway line from Tallinn to the Lithuanian-Polish border to create a connection with other European countries.

Part of the project costs, estimated around EUR 5.8 billion in total, are to be financed from the EU funds.
