Dombrovskis confirmed as EU trade commissioner

The European Parliament on Wednesday confirmed the European Commission's Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis (New Unity) as the EU trade commissioner, reported LETA/BNS.

Also today, Irish politician Mairead McGuinness was confirmed as the EU financial stability, financial services and the Capital Markets Union commissioner.


515 European Parliament members voted for Dombrovskis' candidacy, 110 voted against him and seventy abstained, as the European Parliament's press secretary Janus Krastins told LETA. McGuinness was confirmed in a 583-75 vote with 37 abstentions.


The European Commission reshuffle was prompted by the resignation of the former trade commissioner Phil Hogan at the end of August, Krastins reminded.
