Latvian students encouraged to develop creative solutions for ensuring financial stability

Continuing the tradition GE Money Bank invites students of Latvian universities and colleges to take part in the unique intellectual Olympiad for students “GE Money Bank INTELLECTICUS 2009” and fight for an opportunity to go to an international economic conference and obtain the prestigious knowledge cup for their university.

“GE Money Bank Intellecticus” is organized already for the second year. GE Money Bank in cooperation with the Centre for Curriculum Development and Examinations (CCDI) launched the tradition with the aim to enable erudition of students and engage them in solving current social issues. That is why the topic of the Olympiad differs each year.

The topic of the Olympiad in 2009 according to the overall situation is „Savings Solutions for Ensuring Financial Stability”. It refers not only to private persons, but also to companies therefore the second official “GE Money Bank Intellecticus” cooperation partner this year is the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), which management representatives and members will be in the Olympiad jury along with university lecturers.

“Financial literacy underlies any economic growth and well-being of society. Hence I’m glad that GE Money Bank has managed to launch in Latvia several successful financial education initiatives such as Money Planning Centre and “GE Money Bank Intellecticus”. We also see that our established tradition of intellectual Olympiad for students can bring value to society on the whole. Students are future managers and company owners therefore in our opinion this generation should be involved in current country’s events already now. We are proud that already last year approximately 100 students took part in the contest and we hope that this year even more will be willing to show their erudition,” stresses Dmitrijs Cimbers, GE Money Bank CEO.

The same as in 2008 the Olympiad is organized in two parts. The first part or the qualification stage takes place from 14 September to 19 October. Within this period students have to create a team of five people and submit solutions for the three qualification stage tasks; two tasks are related to financial situations of private persons but the third one – to a company. Jury commission will look through submitted solutions of every team. Only ten best teams will participate in the final that will take place on 7th November in Riga.

“GE Money Bank Intellecticus 2009” qualification stage tasks and regulations are available on the GE Money Bank web page www.gemoneybank.lv as well as information has been sent to more than 30 universities and colleges.

“It’s often stressed that the principle Latvian development resource and the future hope are educated, creative and enterprising people – it’s time to fill this idea with specific contents. We are really glad about GE Money Bank initiative encouraging young people in Latvian universities to think about country’s and business development at the same time developing its potential and competitiveness. The best way to solve today‘s challenges is with tomorrow’s way of thinking – therefore we wish success to all „GE Money Bank Intellecticus“ participants,“ tells Daniels Pavļuts, LCCI Board member and Strategy Director.

Both qualification and final tasks were developed by a competent jury commission, which will also participate in their assessment – associate professor of the University of Latvia Marina Kudinska, RSEEBA lecturer, professor Māris Buiķis, AS KVADRA PAK board member Kārlis Šēnhofs, LCCI Board member and Strategy Director Daniels Pavļuts, SECC educational Olympiad organizer Agnese Mīļā, as well as GE Money Bank representatives – GE Money Bank Asset Management board member Oļegs Koržeņevskis, GE Money Bank Corporate Client Service Division manage Ilva Nīcgale and Savings and Investment Products manager Aleksandrs Čerņagins.

Already during the first Olympiad “GE Money Bank Intellecticus 2008”, which topic was “Personnel Management in Existent Economic Situation” unexpected responsiveness of students was observed – more than 20 university teams applied to participate in the Olympiad. In a tough fight the main prize – individual General Electric leadership training and the travelling “GE Money Bank Intellecticus” knowledge cup went to the Vidzeme University College and its students.
