Estonia continues supporting purchase of electric cars

BC, Tallinn, 12.06.2014.Print version
The Estonian government supported at its Thursday session a bill, according to which, purchase of environment-friendly electric cars can be supported for a year longer than planned in case there are sufficient funds, till the end of 2015, reports LETA/Postimees Online.

Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that people have overcome the initial mistrust and the data of the past few months confirms that people prefer buying quiet electric vehicles that are cheap to maintain. "Therefore, we proposed to the government to continue paying the subsidies till the end of 2015."

The state-owned KredEx foundation will also be able to pay the costs related to post acquisition activities of acquiring electric cars, speed charging services and short-term rental service till 2020.

Kredex says that there is a continued strong interest towards electric cars, for example, in April 47 and in May 42 applications for payment of purchase subsidies were received.

Over three years, support totalling EUR 7.4 million for purchasing 447 cars has been allocated. The most popular electric-powered car is Nissan Leaf, 249 of which have been acquired with Kredex's support.

Estonia has installed over 163 quick chargers across the state, used for an average of 4,600 times a month.
