Most of the new twenty stationary speed cameras will be located in Riga and in the vicinity of Riga, according to the map of speed camera locations posted on the Road Traffic Safety Directorate's website, informs LETA.

In Riga, the speed cameras will be located on Krasta Street, Brivibas Street, near the Dienvidu (Southern) Bridge, and two cameras on Kalnciema Street.

One speed camera will be set up on the A3 highway, one on the A4 highway, one on the A5 highway, two on the A6 highway, one on the A7 highway, four on the A8 highway, three on the A10 highway, one on the P1 road and one on the P80 road.

The procurement of the new speed cameras could be organized in March or April. The cameras could then be set up this fall at the earliest, Road traffic Safety Directorate's board member Janis Golubevs told LETA last week.

It is currently impossible to say how much the cost – the price will be determined by competition. Previous estimates said one speed camera could cost around EUR 42,000.

As for mobile speed cameras, nothing has been decided yet. While they have been approved in principle, the stationary speed cameras will be set up first, said Golubevs.

Last August, the government decided that the Road Traffic Safety Directorate would be responsible for buying, setting up and maintaining speed cameras in Latvia. The government also ordered the directorate to present a report about the various properties of various speed cameras, their costs, and others.

Private company Vitronic speed cameras were removed from Latvian roads in December 2012, whereas the police use four speed cameras they had bought several years ago.
