Tall Ships Regatta to start from Klaipeda in summer 2015

BC, Vilnius, 17.02.2014.Print version
Lithuania's port city of Klaipeda has received another invitation from sail training organization Sail Training International (STI) to become the starting port of the Tall Ships Regatta race. Mayor of Klaipeda, Vytautas Grubliauskas, is sure that there will never be enough of the highest level maritime culture events and will be looking for the city Council to support the idea, informs LETA/ELTA.

Last year, Klaipeda City Municipality has signed an agreement, with STI to become the Tall Ships Races Baltic finishing port in 2017. That year the city will celebrate 765th anniversary of its establishment. Meanwhile, this year, Klaipeda was invited to become the Tall Ships Regatta starting port for 2015.

Preliminary plans are to hold the Tall Ships Regatta in late May or early June of 2015, so that the race coincides with traditional cultural events in the city - the ship parade on the European Maritime Day or the Klaipeda Castle Jazz Festival.

Mayor Grubliauskas says that spectacular maritime events provide an opportunity for the city to reveal its potential as the centre of summer entertainment and recreation, as well as develop strong traditions in this area.

"Each STI invitation means high evaluation of partnership and provides a great opportunity to Klaipeda and Lithuania. I am pleased about the active and efficient work of the International Relation, Business Development and Tourism Department of Klaipeda City Municipality Administration. Personally, I have already firmly supported the idea and hope that the City Council will do the same," said the mayor.
