Nevertheless, the volume of cargo handled at the port in 2013 is equal to the one handled in 2011, explained Ratniece-Kadege.
In 2013, reductions in Liepaja Port cargo turnover, similarly Freeport of Riga and Freeport of Ventspils cargo turnover, were registered in nearly all types of cargo. The main difference is that grain and grain products constitute the largest part of Liepaja Port cargo turnover. Due to bulk cargo, Liepaja Port recorded the largest increase in cargo turnover in 2012. Therefore it is only logical that the port had the largest reduction in turnover in 2013, determined by relatively poor grain harvests. Liepajas metalurgs insolvency also affected the port's turnover, admitted Ratniece-Kadege.
Liepaja Port stevedoring companies handled 4,838,299,76 tons of cargo in 2013. Bulk cargo constituted the largest share of the port's cargo turnover last year – 58%, followed by general cargo – 34%, and liquid cargo – 8%.
