Highways Board traffic expert Villu Vane told Postimees that right at the start of the year, nine cameras, acquired already last year, would be installed on Tallinn-Saku-Laagri highway, Tallinn-Rannamõisa-Kloogaranna highway and Tallinn-Rapla-Türi highway.
"We try to come with the cameras to the smaller highways in the vicinity of Tallinn – it is relatively uncomfortable to drive there at morning and evening rush hours and there are also a lot of traffic accidents," explained Vane.
The Highways Board acquired 13 new speed cameras from the 2013 budget and will buy a bit less this year.
The need for more speed cameras is indicated by the fact that last year, the number of speed violators ascertained by the speed cameras grew again. In 2013, 60,696 speed camera fine notices were sent, the same as in 2011. In 2012, just 45,644 vehicle owners were fined on the basis of speed camera tickets. The majority of the fines are in the sum of 9-18 euros and the largest amount of speed violations are registered in places on highways where the speed limit is 70 km/h.
The first speed cameras started working in Estonia in May 2010. By now there are 44 casings with 31 speed cameras in use.
