After the amendment of the Traffic Act entered into force in Estonia on December 27 2008, the police officers fined a total of 1,245 individuals a total amount of 1,092,780 kroons in the first week, writes Eesti Päevaleht/LETA.

This amount is not final as according to the police authorities, the misdemeanour cases are still being processed. The amount of fines mentioned have been imposed in expedited proceedings or warning proceedings.

In the Traffic Act amendment, punishments were made stricter for speeding. In case of exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 kmph, one may be fined by 1,800 kroons instead of the former fine of 600 kroons and in exceeding the set speed limit by up to 40 kmph, the fine may reach 6,000 kroons instead of 3,000 kroons.

The new law imposes a fine of up to 3,000 kroons for driving without a safety belt and in repeated cases, the fine might reach 6,000 kroons.
