Latvian ports see 7.3% reduction in cargo turnover in 10 months

Cargo turnover at Latvian ports reached 58.8 million tons in the first ten months of 2013, 7.3% less than in the same period in 2012, the Transport Ministry's Transit Policy Department informed LETA/Nozare.lv.

In January-October 2012, Latvian ports handled 63.4 million tons of cargo.

 

The Freeport of Riga handled 29.4 million tons of cargo in January-October 2013, 2.8% less than in January-October 2012. The Freeport of Ventspils handled 24.3 million tons, a 6.8% decrease, the Port of Liepaja – 3.96 million tons, a 34.1% decrease.

 

Bulk cargo made up the largest part of cargo turnover at Latvian ports in the first ten months of 2013 – 28.7 million tons, followed by liquid cargo – 20.3 million tons, and general cargo – 9.8 million tons.

 

The steepest reduction was recorded for general cargo – 10.1%, followed by bulk cargo – 7.9%, and liquid cargo – 4.9%.

 

As reported, compared to 2011, cargo turnover at Latvian ports rose 9.3% in 2012. Latvian ports handled 75.17 million tons of cargo in 2012, compared to 68.82 million tons in 2011.
