EU Commission rejects plan to build "swine fence"

BC, Riga, 09.09.2013.Print version
The effect of building a "swine fence" along the borders with Russia and Belarus will be insufficient and the entire idea is not feasible, European Commission experts said during an international conference in Vilnius on September 5th, informs LETA/Nozare.lv.

The International Epizootic Bureau criticized the Lithuanian Food and Veterinary Service's idea to build a fence along the borders with Russia and Belarus to stop wild boars from entering the country and spreading African swine fever.

According to Latvian Food and Veterinary Service Director General Maris Balodis, his Lithuanian colleagues no longer insist on building a "swine fence" as a preventive measure and are now considering other solutions to prevent African swine fever from spreading into the Baltic countries.

On September 10-11, the European Commission will decide on allotting funds to Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian and Polish food and veterinary services for preventive measures against African swine fever.

Latvia has requested EUR 6 million for implementing these measures in 2013 and 2014.
