Elektriraudtee becomes Elron

BC, Tallinn, 27.08.2013.Print version
Estonian state-owned electric commuter train operator AS Elektriraudtee (Electric Railways Co) announced on Tuesday that it starts using the trademark Elron, to reflect the fact that the company will start operating intercity diesel train traffic also in 2014, informs LETA.

The official name change takes place in the middle of October but the transition starts in September.

While so far, Elektriraudtee has operated the electric trains network in the city of Tallinn and its vicinity, starting 2014, Elektriraudtee will start servicing all Estonian train routes, including the diesel trains network and thus the current name doesn't reflect the company's operating sphere anymore, the company said.

The company said in a press release that the new name was chosen since it is memorable and easy to pronounce to also others than Estonian-speakers. The long-term future vision of Elron also includes operations at international routes.

The name Elron comes from the words Eesti Liinirongid (Estonian Regular Train Service). The company is fully owned by the state.
