European tram manufacturers are looking forward to the international competition in Vilnius. Vilnius municipality decided in 2012 that the first tram line will connect the city centre and Santariskes, informs LETA/ELTA, referring to Lietuvos rytas.

Already in 2013, the tender will be published and the first passengers will be transferred in 2016. Vilnius City Mayor Arturas Zuokas says that Vilnius deserves a tram.

Zuokas has received not only support but also criticism and derision. However, European manufacturers took Vilnius ambitions seriously.

Representatives of the largest companies said that they were absolutely willing to attend the tender. "We are very interested in a tender in Vilnius. Many cities in Europe intend to build the first tramway line. Therefore Lithuanian capital in this case is not something exceptional," said one of the largest manufacturers of trams in Europe – France's Alstom Strategy Head Loic Dubois.
