The "BalticBike" rent-a-bike service, run by the national airline airBaltic last year, has been cancelled by the airline as its priorities have changed. Nevertheless, City Council believes that the bicycle rental project is important for the city and may become popular with tourists.

Therefore the Riga City Council's Property Department will announce a tender for the right to rent nine land parcels in the city where "BalticBike" bicycle rent stands were located last year.

Riga Vice Mayor Andris Ameriks told LETA that the local government was not planning to organize the development of bicycle rental in the city. There are many bicycle workshops and stores in Riga that could do this, he believes.

airBaltic leased the nine land parcels for LVL 2,395 a year, but the five-year lease contract was terminated before term on March 27 this year.
