Cargo volume at Estonian ports fell by 10% in 2012

The cargo volume of Estonian ports fell in 2012 while more people than the year before visited Estonian post on board passenger ships, Public Broadcasting cites Statistics Estonia blog, writes LETA.

Last year, 43.3 million tons of cargo was loaded and unloaded in Estonian ports, which is 10% less than in 2011. The cause for the fall of the cargo volume was development of Russian ports and reduction of liquid cargo volumes.

 

Loading of ships formed 31.5 million tons of the cargo volume of ports and unloading 11.9 million tonnes. Both loading and unloading decreased by a tenth.

 

Loading and unloading of transit cargo formed 29.7 million tonnes, a fall of 14% in a year.

 

The number of cargo ships that visited the ports fell by two% to 4,975.

 

The biggest cargo group handled was refined oil products (nearly 25.3 million tonnes), a fall of 15% in a year.

 

The cargo transport for Estonian main ports was the most active with ports of USA, Finland, Holland, Sweden, Russia and Singapore.

 

9.2 million passengers passed through Estonian ports to sail on international routes and two million passengers used the local regular ship routes. The international routes boosted passenger number by four% while on the main domestic ship routes, passenger numbers grew by 8%.

 

Nearly 425,000 passengers arrived in the ports on hoard cruise ships.

 

The number of passenger ships visiting Estonia was 6,172.
