Restrictions of speed limit in Estonia will be continued in summer

The speed limit can be raised to 110 km/h on certain highways sections on 1st class 4-lane highways in summer.
The committee that convened in the economy and communications ministry, stated that last year the traffic safety situation improved but actions to make traffic safer will be continued. The traffic cameras project continues this year and speed cameras will be installed on roads in Harjumaa county this year.
Last year, there were 1,377 serious traffic accidents in which 87 people died and 1,702 were injured. The number of serious traffic accidents fell in a year by 115, the number of deaths by 14 and the injured by 175. Mostly roads outside towns and villages contributed to the improvement (15%) since in towns and villages the number of accidents fell just by 3%.
The traffic committee, formed in 2008, is headed by economy and communications minister Juhan Parts and it includes also justice, education, finance, interior ministers, highways board director general, police director general and representatives of municipalities and NGOs. The committee convenes once quarter.
