Price of petrol has grown by a third in 5 years in Estonia

The cost of a litre of petrol has grown by one third in the past five years, which means that a driver who covers 30 kilometres a day in their car will have to pay 300 euros per year more than in 2008, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

In 2008, a family who drove 30 kilometres a day spent nearly 80 euros per month on the 95 petrol, currently the price is a little more than 100 euros.

The head of Swedbank of Institute of Private Finances Anne Sägi noted that this has caused many car owners to either cut back on the number of trips they make by car or cut spending in other areas.

A litre of petrol 95 has grown 12 cents in one year and diesel fuel 13 cents per litre. “Even a few cents of price growth in motor fuels means that the annual family budget’s spending side would grow remarkably, particularly for the families where driving a car is inevitable for either getting to work or for getting children to school or primary school,” emphasised Sägi.

She also noted that for many people who live in the country, a car is a necessary item and the distances they cover on an everyday bases are long.

Sägi remarked that fuel prices in Estonia are lower than the European average, but are often a discussion item due to unpredictable changes.
