Termination of contract with Vitronic Baltica will not solve speed camera issues in Latvia

Even if the contract with speed camera supplier Vitronic Baltica is terminated, camera set up issues will not be solved, since the state has no money for the project, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (ZRP) said in an interview with Latvian State Radio today.

LVL 10-11 million is needed to set up the new cameras, but the government currently does not have such funds, emphasized Kozlovskis.

Vitronic Baltica must set them up by May 20 and the minister will instruct the State Police to keep a close eye on the company's fulfillment of contractual terms, writes LETA.

Kozlovskis admitted that this is the first time that the State Police engages in private partnership and therefore there are problems. The minister also pointed out that the State Police cannot give orders to private companies.

The number of Highway Police officers has reduced threefold since 2002. There were around 1,500 Highway Police officers ten years ago. At the moment, their number is down to 600. Kozlovskis believes that traffic safety monitoring does not require considerable human resources, thus reducing corruption risk.
