Estonian Railway Workers Trade Union, Locomotive Staff Trade Union and Edelaraudtee Locomotive Staff Association strike committee approved at their meeting on Thursday of the detailed plan of support strike and decided that a nationwide strike will start at midnight on March 8 and will last for 24 hours initially, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

Railway Workers Trade Union chairman Oleg Chubarov said that no rail carriage will move on Estonian railways on March 8: "The support strike concerns both passenger and cargo transport in the Edelaraudtee, Elektriraudtee, Eesti Raudtee and GoRail companies".

According to a poll on March 1, 68% of Estonian railway workers plan to participate in the strike.

Railway workers strike in support of the Estonian Trade Unions Confederation demands against the unilateral changes of the collective labour contracts law by the government and they also wish to show solidarity with teachers and support their just demands for higher wages. Chubarov said that the support strike is not focused against employers.

Chubarov did not rule out extending the strike if employees are widely threatened or forced by employers to work during the strike.
