The internal audit department of Estonian state-owned railway company Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) ascertained that its Latvian company Livonia Rail Service board member Ahto Kalamees issued loans and made transfers to a company to which he was connected to, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

Kalamees has been fired by now and in connection with the affair, Jaanus Paas, manager of EVR Cargo, which is a subsidiary of Eesti Raudtee and owner of Livonia Rail Service (LRS), also resigned.

Eesti Raudtee said that the unpaid loan amounts to 576,000 EUR but more detailed damages are being ascertained still.

Eesti Raudtee turned last week to law enforcement institutions to initiate a criminal investigation. LRS presented a demand to get back the money and sued Kalamees and companies connected to him in court.

Eesti Raudtee manager Kaido Simmermann said that the deed of EVR Cargo subsidiary's manager is a very serious one and the concern has to analyse how to prevent such things happening in the future.

Kalamees worked in Eesti Raudtee marketing service since 1996. He became LRS board member in 2007.

Expediting firm LRS was created in 2006 to service clients in Latvia. The ten months turnover of the company was 6.6 mln EUR.
