Lithuanian Seimas approves of luxury tax on cars

On Tuesday, the Lithuanian Parliament has approved a draft law on vehicles taxation. Conservative MP Vitas Matuzas says that the new tax will be applied to luxurious cars.

The draft law was favoured by 72 MPs to 16, with 34 abstentions. MP Gintaras Steponavicius of the Liberals' Movement said that a group of MPs will call for an independent examination of the draft law, informs LETA/ELTA.

Transport Minister Eligijus Masiulis was sorry that the proposed taxation on cars will not promote green transportation. In his view, an 8-9 year old car with a powerful engine is not a luxurious means of transport.

The draft law stipulates a monthly tax of LTL 0.5 (EUR 0.15) per 1 kilowatt for cars with an engine of over 150 kilowatts, if the cars have been registered in the last 10 years. The tax will be also applied to over 50 kilowatts motorcycles, sailing yachts and aircraft, except balloons.
