LETA found out from the SRS's Public Relations Department that the illegal cigarettes were found at the Paternieki Border Control Point on the border with Belarus on July 10 when carrying out a search of a truck entering the country.
Investigators believe that customs officials working at the border are involved in the smuggling scheme.
In the interest of the investigation, the SRS has not revealed how many customs officials could be involved.
The cigarettes, with Belarus excise-duty stickers, were found inside boxes carrying egg cartons.
